NEWS RELEASE

Committee of Concerned APS Members
dennisgilson@comcast.net

Dear APS Chapter:

We are writing to express our concern with the proposed bylaw amendments that appear on the APS Election Ballot you have received. We ask that you please cast your Chapter’s vote “NO” to defeat these proposed bylaw amendments.

The current APS Board, meeting in closed executive sessions without membership participation or input, has proposed to create a new executive position, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), to whom the existing Executive Director would report. The principal duties of the CEO are to: 1) raise $1 million in donations each year; 2) stop membership decline; 3) reduce costs by 10%, and 4) raise revenues by 20%. This is a prescription which has failed three times in the last 20 years.

To enable this action, the Board is proposing to change the APS bylaws to remove all mention of the Executive Director’s duties. Although the Board arrived at its decision on the new CEO position last fall and voted to amend the bylaws on February 6 of this year, these actions were only recently announced to the membership and a public meeting was not held until March 27. This left inadequate time for a reasoned decision on the part of those who must approve it – the APS membership. We believe these actions are ill-advised and will likely result in reduced member services and/or increased member costs.

A copy of our advertisement, which appears in the May American Philatelist, contains additional details and is enclosed.

Time is of the essence. Please discuss this issue with your members and cast your Chapter’s vote “NO” on the proposed bylaw amendments.

Respectfully,
Dennis R. Gilson, Representative
